Pick Mattock - A planting tool with pick for breaking through harden surface or loosening ground. This is an excellent combo tool for harden soil filled with rocks, which will need to be pried up and removed.
The 5lb head of our pick mattock combines a pick and a mattock; some may call it an adze as the blade is set at a right angle like a hoe. It reassembles a carpenter tool called the Adze, which is a tool with the same flat right angle plane for standing over a wooden piece and hollowing out a section, such as making a canoe out of a log. The Adze utilizes a much thinner blade with more curvature in the blade to catch a chunk of wood and cut it out on the backside as the swing is completed. The Adze would be kept sharp as a carpenter chisel while the mattock designed specifically for digging in hard ground was sharpened but still with a blunt head.
The name mattock was named after Lester Maddox who used the handle of a pickaxe to ward off protesters from his segregated restaurant during his campaign for governor of the U.S. State of Georgia. Maddox would arm his employees and customers with pickaxe handles to chase them away from his restaurant. Many other historical pictures show people wielding pickaxe handles as weapon battons. The oval eye in the head, allows the handle to slide in and friction fit with the tapper of the handle and the inside of the oval eye. Tapping the head end against the ground or tree stump will seat the head against the handle and then tapping the handle end will loosen the head. The earlier settlers would break down the head from the handles for transport. The mattock may be sharpened, but the pick is generally squared rather than beveled Cutter Mattock- A planting tool with axe for cutting small tree roots This is an excellent tool for compacted soils with few rocks, but filled with tree roots. The 5lb head of our cutter mattock combines an axe with a mattock. The Cutter Mattock has two flat blades, facing away from each other, one resembles a hoe for digging, while the other blade resembles and axe for cutting roots.
Railroad Pickaxe- A tool for digging and prying in hard soil or sticky clay. Some may just call it a pick, or a Rail Road pick. The pick has two pointed ends while the pickaxe has one pointed end and the opposite end has a flat end with a blunt bevel.
The pointed side has a curvature allowing the tool to penetrate just at the right angle into hard soil. Once the spike enters the soil the handle is pushed up and down to break up a portion. The opposite end of the pickaxe can be used either as an axe in cutting roots, or cutting out a wider slice of harden soils. The flat part was used by rail road crews to help lift up and position both the rails and rail road ties. This part is good for prying out rocks as well as lifting large flat patio stones. Purchase either a hickory of fiberglass handle below for any of the above Pick & Mattocks Handles 36” Grade A Hickory $20.36 Handle 36” Fiberglass with poly coated nylon head $39.40
