My granddad taught me early on the importance of keeping a shovel clean and sharpened.  Actually when I was about 8 years old he caught up with me behind the tool shed after he found that I had taken one of his prized shovels out to dig a pretend army fort, I made the mistake and returned it to the shed dirty. Now older and wiser I understand he had lived through the Great Depression and he really valued and cherished a good garden tool. He would spend more time cleaning the tools and applying a thin coat of grease then some of the garden and yard jobs he would use them for.
