Mission- Arts and Crafts Style Clocks
Flat rate shipping within the Continental United States is $30
Mission style clocks are available in a mantel or wall version. These are exact replicas using the same materials and wood craftsmanship used in Mission style furniture and accessories dating back to the late 1800s up through the early 1900s. The designs seen today in antique shops and in reproduction items were influenced by a mixture of Moorish, Spanish, Spanish Colonial, Arts and Crafts, Native American, Japanese and Shaker. The word Mission came from the Moorish Missions settled in California and the Southwest part of the United States. At that time furniture used in the missions was bulky, but simply built with straight lines. As more people journeyed west the design concepts were brought back and influenced by the Craftsman movement that was popular in England. The craftsmanship focused on simple designs using natural patterns to draw out the aspects of nature’s best.
Generally quarter sawn white oak was used to build mission style furniture and accessories. The grain patterns in white oak, especially when it is quarter sawn form unique artistic patterns of flowing and swirling lines. As white oak became harder to obtain, the more abundant red oak was utilized and still utilized today. Quarter sawn white oak is a premium hardwood used in more upscale items. Mission style and Arts and Craft Style are interchangeable to describe this period of furniture and accessories.
The Amish are well known in their craftsmanship utilizing the same techniques passed down from generations. Most Amish furniture is influenced by either Shaker or the Mission style designs.
Our Mission-Arts and Crafts clocks use premium quarter sawn white oak, they are Amish handcrafted and finished for generations of beauty and functionality. The Amish still use woodworking and joinery techniques passed down form generations. You will find comparable looking clocks on the market at much lower prices; generally these will be imported, or mass produced cases using cheaper grades of wood, veneered plywood and even plaster. If you cannot see the actual wood grains it is probably a paint stain over cheaper material.
Our Amish handcrafted clocks are built one at a time using only premium hardwoods.
Both the mantel and wall clocks use a Seiko Precision Quartz battery operated movement with dual Westminster and Whittington Chimes.
