We are proud to present the best gun stock manufacturer in the business world wide!
As we began our search for a solid partner to feature custom gun stocks, we looked at several criteria and tried to answer several questions.  First the craftsmanship of the product and service had to live up to Cottage Craft Works' high standards for quality and customer service.  Second, we knew we had to find a cottage based business that was small enough to fit our profile, but who could also supply a wide variety of custom stocks options to fit many different guns.  Third, we found there was simply too much jargon regarding diffrent "grades" of gunstocks. It was too confusing for most folks. To solve this, we wanted to find a cottage business that used the same standards of grading passed down through generations of gun stock manufacturing.  Fourth, we wanted the experience of those many generations to supply our customers the very best options.  We are pleased to add the Masters of gun stock manufacturing to the Cottage Craft Works family.  Their craft and stock patterns have been passed down from generations of gun stock craftsmen, and are simply the best.

This small cottage based manufacture is located in the Gun Stock Capital in the world.  They own their own saw mill, they hand select some of the best species of walnut, maple, cherry, and other hardwoods that can be found.  Most might consider the crafting of the actual gun stock from a wood blank to be the determining factor of a quality gun stock. The truth is though is the start of a high quality gun stock starts with the tree and wood selection.  Only a skilled accomplished saw man knows how to cut and slice a tree to find the best blanks, which will provide strength and a grain pattern knowing as the “Figure”. Then the experienced craftsmen forms and shapes the stock.  This company has currently in-stock blanks for 10,000 different types of rifles and shot guns. Stocks come in either one piece or two pieces, which includes the fore-end.

Grading of wood is based on the average percentage of figure on both sides.
Our gun stocks are sold by grade levels.  Grades are based on the percentage of Figure on each side of the stock then divided by two or 1/2 to establish the total percentage of grade.  For example; if one side of the stock presents 50% Figure and the other side presents only 10% Figure the stock is graded at only 30% of Figure. Some wood grains will be straight flowing with little to no contrast or 0% figure. These are considered Standard Grade.  Stocks with up to 30% Figure are considered Fancy, stocks between 30%- 60% Figure are considered Extra Fancy, Stocks ranging 60%-90% Figure are considered Select Fancy, and only those stocks with 90%-100% of a crisp well defined figure are worthy of the highly sought after Exhibition Grade.

The most popular stocks are known as “Feathercrotch”.  The Figure is displayed as feather pattern leading from a split.  These cuts come from a fork in the tree or where a large branch grew.  The “V” is known as the crotch and the pattern resembling a large peacock feather flowing from the “V” is the feather. Hence, the name "Feathercrotch."  Other stock wood grain patterns are formed by the species of wood, stresses occurred during the growing process and the direction of the cut. The names are derived from the cut.  For example, "Quilted Maple" resembles a quilt pattern; other woods will resemble a zebra pattern, tiger or broken patterns, and so forth.
