Description / Maytag Wringer Head-Frame Parts

It would be data prohibitive to list each individual part with shipping. Therefore, shipping & handling is based on an average purchase of a few parts. We do charge a minimum $12 flat base rate on all items regardless of the size. This is to cover the cost to process, pack, drop-ship, and actual shipping charges.

Additional shipping may be required for larger orders. We will let you know if additional shipping will be needed. If you checkout using PayPal we can send you an invoice if needed. Otherwise, we will also need to have credit card information as our system does not store it with the order.

*For the A5669 air-powered foot wringer safety actuator, we have found this source that seems to work. Click Here. We are not connected with Presair and only provide the link as an option. We are not carrying it because, if the wringer actuator seal cannot retain air, it will not be effective.

The Maytag A5669 Air-Powered Foot Wringer Safety Actuator is a pneumatic safety device designed to help reduce the risk of accidental engagement of the wringer rolls. When the operator depresses the foot squeeze bulb, air pressure travels through the hose to the plastic actuator. The actuator then pushes against the clutch release mechanism, allowing the wringer rollers to engage only while sufficient air pressure is maintained.

Inside the actuator is a flexible rubber diaphragm (membrane) that seals the air chamber. Over time, age, heat, and ozone exposure can cause this membrane to become brittle, crack, or develop pinholes. When this occurs, air pressure leaks away, and the actuator can no longer engage the clutch—even if a new foot squeeze bulb is installed.

Testing the Actuator

The actuator can be tested using a blood pressure cuff squeeze bulb or a similar low-pressure hand pump connected to the actuator hose. Pump the actuator while checking for air leakage or loss of pressure.

Important: Never use compressed shop air or any high-pressure air source. Excessive pressure can permanently damage the rubber diaphragm.

Repair Options

The actuator housing can be carefully pried apart to inspect the diaphragm. If the rubber remains soft and flexible, very small punctures or tears may sometimes be repaired with a quality rubber-compatible adhesive.

Unfortunately, replacement rubber diaphragms are not currently available, making repair the only option for many original actuators.

Replacement Foot Squeeze Bulb

If the original foot squeeze bulb is cracked, hardened, or leaking, it can be replaced with a compatible foot-operated air bulb.

Bypassing the Safety Actuator

Some owners have installed a screw or other mechanical spacer where the air hose connects to the actuator, effectively keeping the clutch engaged full-time and eliminating the pneumatic safety function. This modification bypasses the original Maytag safety interlock.

Many earlier Maytag wringer washers were manufactured without this pneumatic safety system, and many owners are unaware that later machines incorporated this added safety feature. Likewise, some Amish rebuilders and collectors have chosen to bypass the actuator because replacement diaphragms have not been available and reproducing the assembly has not been a priority.

Safety & Legal Disclaimer

WARNING: The Maytag A5669 Air-Powered Foot Wringer Safety Actuator is a factory-installed safety device intended to reduce the risk of accidental engagement of the wringer rollers. Disabling, bypassing, modifying, or removing this safety system increases the risk of serious personal injury, including hand and finger entrapment.

Cottage Craft Works does not recommend, endorse, or instruct users to bypass or disable any original safety device. Any modification to the actuator or clutch mechanism is performed solely at the owner's discretion and risk. The owner assumes all responsibility for the safe operation, maintenance, and use of the machine after any modification.

Always disconnect electrical power before servicing the washer, inspect all safety components before operation, and use the wringer with appropriate caution. Cottage Craft Works assumes no liability for injury, damage, or loss resulting from the modification, bypass, misuse, or operation of vintage equipment with altered or disabled safety devices.

The Amish depended on these old wringer washers as most of the United States population did in the early 1900s until newer modern spin cycle machines were developed. As manufacturing and replacement parts advanced, the Amish began to have difficulty obtaining parts to maintain the wringer washers. So, they began manufacturing their own supply of replacement Maytag parts, as they still do today. Cottage Craft Works.com takes a step back in time to help people who are still using or restoring the vintage home and farm equipment acquire replacement parts.

The washer parts listed are the most sought-after Maytag parts. Our Amish shop can procure or make just about any part that was used on the round or square tub machines. Since the Amish convert most of the machines to gas, air, or DC-driven motors, they don’t manufacture new electric motors. They also don’t use the drain pump, allowing the washer to gravity drain instead. If you need an electric motor or water pump, we can find you a used take-off. Just email us for the availability of any parts that we don’t list.

International customers, please email us with the parts that you need, and we will calculate the shipping cost and send you a PayPal invoice in US Dollars. Duties and taxes will still be due to your country upon delivery.

Parts ship directly from an Amish-owned business without computers; please expect some orders to take up to two weeks to ship. Most parts are stocked, but some may need to be made.
